What are the eligibility requirements for postgraduate scholarships?

Candidate’s past records of education, documents submitted during the application, quality of the sample essays, clarity of objectives, as well as the scores attained in the written examination are taken into consideration by committee members. Please check the admissions web page for all the required documents. Candidates with missing documents by the deadline will not be considered.

What are the formats of sample essays and the statement of purpose?

Sample essays, which must be written in English, can be any type of manuscript (article, term paper etc.), which indicates the level of understanding of international relations. The level of written English and the quality of the paper may have a positive impact on the faculty members who will be involved in the selection process.

The statement of purpose must explain in a page the reasons why the candidate applies to the department. Clarity of objectives may have an equally positive impact on the faculty. Candidates are suggested to make clear in their statement as to what exactly they are interested in as their subject of graduate thesis; such as international security, international relations theory, European Union, political economy or area studies.

What kinds of scholarships are provided for graduate students?

M.A. and Ph.D. students are granted the following types of scholarships:

Tuition Scholarship: Students do not pay tuition.

Achievement Scholarship: This scholarship includes both a tuition waiver and a monthly stipend.

Do scholarships include dormitory accommodation?

Accommodation is not included in the scholarships. The department may offer a dorm scholarship for candidates whose permanent residence is outside Ankara. The student may also receive a discount for staying at the dormitory upon evaluation of his/her request to the department. In some cases, our postgraduate students are able to cover their dormitory fees by serving as dorm assistants.

How are the graduate applications evaluated?

The applicants are evaluated in consideration of their GPAs, ALES scores (for Turkish citizens), GRE scores (for non-Turkish citizens), TOEFL scores, a written examination, and other required documents listed in the admissions web page. The candidates who fulfill these requirements will be evaluated by a committee and called in for an interview. Since the scholarship and assistantship quotas given to the faculty are limited, interviews may be decisive. The list of admitted applicants will then be sent to the Institute for a final approval and the list will be announced within the month of June.
