We are pleased to announce that Refet Gürkaynak has been elected a Fellow of the International Association for Applied Econometrics (IAAE) for 2025. The IAAE Fellowship recognizes distinguished contributions to applied econometrics. Fellows participate in the governance of the Association, including the annual selection of new Fellows, and hold lifetime Fellowship status subject to active membership.

The Bilkent ECON team, led by captain Utku Gökçen with members Mert Cula and Tolga Dönmez under the academic supervision of Prof. Dr. Hakan Kara, achieved first place in the Middle East and Africa region of the 2025 Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge. As a result of this success, Bloomberg for Education will provide all Bilkent University students with six months of free Bloomberg.com access.

At our annual Graduate Picnic, we celebrated both academic achievements and teaching excellence. The picnic serves as a gathering where we reflect on placement successes, share experiences, and recognize outstanding contributions within the department. This year, we presented the Best TA Awards to two graduate students: Kardelen Sural and Mehmet Çağrı Kartal, in recognition of their exceptional efforts, dedication, effectiveness, and commitment in supporting undergraduate teaching.

A new book by Assoc. Prof. Bilin Neyaptı has been released: “Understanding Fiscal Decentralization,” published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book provides a comprehensive overview of fiscal decentralization (FD), outlining how it interacts with domestic structures and institutions. It reviews both theoretical and empirical literature relating to macroprudential institutions and macroeconomic outcomes, arguing that the complex relationship between FD and economic development undermines a one-size-fits-all approach for FD design. It examines issues such as fiscal discipline, income distribution and economic crises in view of shifting macroeconomic paradigms and technological change. Combining theory with empirical and graphical analysis, this book offers key insights for students, researchers and policymakers who are interested in public economics and fiscal policy.

We are pleased to announce that Talat Şenocak has joined our faculty. He received his PhD from Bilkent University under the supervision of Semih Koray and Kemal Yıldız. This semester, he is teaching Mathematics for Economists at both undergraduate and graduate levels (ECON 225 and ECON 515), as well as Economic Theory for Engineers (ECON 207). His research interests include game theory, social choice theory, and implementation theory. In his free time, he enjoys cooking new recipes.

We are pleased to welcome Changwoo Park, who received his PhD from the University of Rochester under the supervision of William Thomson. This semester, he will be teaching Microeconomics – Competitive Markets (ECON 203). His research focuses on game theory, market design, and matching. Outside academia, he enjoys running, hiking, and watching movies.
